The first fire service in Cowansville was established in 1881. The city’s history discloses a few major fires that had significant impact on the community.
- December 3, 1944 – a fire in the downtown area of Cowansville.
- July 30, 1947 a fire at St. Thérèse church.
- June 12, 1993 – a fire at the VyPlus company in the industrial park (makers of vinyl sheeting) – this fire required that the municipal Emergency Measures plan be put into operation. The mutual aid services from Rougemont and Granby, as well as the Bromont IBM Emergency Service were called in.
- June 24, 1998 – a fire at Ferronnerie Cowansville, on rue du Sud. All mutual aid services were called in.
In addition, the fire fighters have been called upon to assist in floods and during the ice storm of 1998. Fortunately, the City has never suffered the loss of a fire fighter while on duty.
The department is equipped and trained to answer any emergency that might arise on the territory. Fire fighters are called upon in a great variety of situations: fire fighting, hazardous material spill clean-up, assistance in floods, interventions in confined spaces, nautical rescue, high-level rescue, and assistance to other emergency services are but a few of these instances. Fire fighters are also trained to investigate the cause of fires.
In case of need, the fire department can call upon its mutual aid partners from Farnham, Dunham, Lac-Brome, Waterloo, Sutton, Bromont as well as the Bromont-IBM emergency team.
The prevention office is made up of two part-time prevention officers who are on duty three days per week. The prevention office works principally in the area of by-law application, public education, training, promotion of fire safety, the preparation of intervention and emergency measures plans for industries, fire inspection and heating system verification.
