How to avoid a fire
- Use only certified heating equipment that is in good
condition, well maintained and use it only as recommended.
- Do not do any deep-frying on the stove top with a pot or with a frying pan – use a deep fryer that is equipped with a thermostat, or better still encourage your local chip stand.
- Make sure that your electrical system is in good order. Call on a
certified electrician for your electrical maintenance work.
- Store your dangerous products safely and well out of reach of children.
- Install your BBQ at a reasonable distance from the house when using it.
- Keep smoking material and candles out of the reach of children
- Use deep ash trays and safe candle holders.

Fire Prevention Tips
In case of fire :
- Get people away from the dangerous area
- Sound the alarm
- Call 911
- Do not try to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher yourself
unless the fire is small and you are in no danger
- Stay outside of any burning premises and wait for help
- Do not try to re-enter the building
Making your home fire safe :
- Make sure that you have a smoke detector on each storey;
change the batteries at least once a year.
- Maintain an accessible ABC fire extinguisher
in good condition.
- Keep all exits free and uncluttered.
- Prepare an evacuation plan for your family: agree on a meeting
point, practice evacuations periodically. Involve the children.
- If there is a fire hydrant on your property, make sure that it is
clear of snow or debris. Do not pile snow near it.
